DPI Comp 2; Welsh Salon DPI thoughts and advice

We will start with the DPI Competition 2, which was aborted on 8 January.

For the WIP session, we recommend that you bring along DPI images that might be suitable for the 2026 Welsh Salon, for constructive discussion and suggestions.

Competition 2

Our first meeting in 2026 will be a Competition. So get your prints and DPIs ready and look out for emails for details.

Members may submit up to one colour print and one monochrome print. These should be sturdily mounted in a mount not exceeding 500x400mm, and labelled with the image title, membership number (not name) and number of the Competition. They should be handed in on the evening of the competition.

Members may also submit one colour digital image (DPI) as a jpeg file, AND one monochrome DPI. They should be sized to be no greater than 1920 pixels along the horizontal edge and no greater than 1080 pixels along the vertical edge. The file name should be allocated in the format:
title -membership number – competition number, (e.g. Sand castle_17_Comp1).

Please send DPIs to geoffpoolephotography@gmail.com and put “Comp 1” in the subject title of the email. Although your membership number should always be in the file name, it’s helpful if you sign the email with your name, so that I can sort through them more quickly. Your name will not be seen by other members.

Presentations and Christmas Social

This will be our last meeting before Christmas. There will be three members’ presentations, followed by an informal get together.

A Career in Portaiture – Krish Nagar

Krish Nagar is an internationally published fine art, alternative fashion and portrait photographer.  His presentation will include working in the above fields plus the importance of lighting, composition and framing.

Work in Progress 1

Following last season’s success of the ‘WIP’ sessions, this will be the first of three.

Members are asked to select two prints that they consider to be “works in progress” and, in case numbers are smaller than anticipated, up to three “spares” to be used if time permits i.e. up to five prints altogether. The prints do not need to be mounted and can be any size up to A3. Members who do not have a printer – please contact  [email protected].

At the hall, tables will be laid out for 3 groups. Before the tea break, each group will discuss one print, before moving on to the next. After the tea break, one or more spokespersons from each table will be asked to show each of the prints on their table to all members present, and provide a summary of observations and suggestions they and their fellow members have made. This provides opportunities for further comments from the floor.

Hallowe’en Night, Social and DPI Showing

Last year we asked you to bring a traditional carved pumpkin and you delivered with style and imagination.  This year please use vegetables and fruit of any variety and quantity to create table decorations of any kind.  And, to avoid doubt, the more surprises the better.  Tables and basic lighting will be provided, and there will be plenty of time for photographs and choosing a winning entry.  To put this occasion into a serious context, Edward Weston’s Pepper No. 30 is one of the most famous still life images of all time – but our evening is intended to be simple fun and more imaginative than photographing a weirdly shaped single fruit.

Tea-break will be a light buffet with tea, coffee or non-alcoholic wine. After tea-break we will show members’ images of Hallowe’en and/or fireworks.  These can be fun, scary or serious images. Please send up to 5 DPI images, relating to Hallowe’en or fireworks, to [email protected] by Monday 27 October.

Competition 1

There was a very good selection of images for our first competition. Congratulations to the following members for ‘favourites’ chosen:

Peter Dennis, Mike Hunt and Geoff Poole for their colour prints;

Pam Lewis, Peter Dennis Mike Davies and Cled Lewis for their mono prints;

Mike Baker, Liza Webb and Geoff Poole for their colour DPIs; and

Patrick Davies and Mike Baker for their mono DPIs.

Presentation by Matthew Browne

The first half of Matthew’s talk will be “Fireworks” (5 November will be only a few weeks away!), and the second half will be “The Northern Lights”.

NOTE – this meeting was previously advertised as a Zoom presentation. Matthew will now attend the Club in person.

Members’ slot

We have two of our very own speakers, both with intriguing titles!

Mike Baker will talk to us  on “Holland – where the heck is that?”

Mike Davies’s talk is “Root vegetable in low orbit”

First meeting of the 2025-26 season

We’re back together! We plan to look at the 2025 Welsh Salon entries. Submit summer DPIs to Nick Thornton beforehand please.
